Legislating to support tourism in Wales

The Welsh Government remains committed to developing legislation which will support tourism in Wales. Earlier this week, the Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Welsh Language and the Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning issued a statement to update the Senedd. They have also written an open letter to the members of the Visitor Economy Forum to update them. The letter thanks the tourism sector for the constructive feedback and engagement to date as this work has developed. It also announces that the Visitor Accommodation (Register and Levy) Etc. (Wales) Bill is expected to be introduced to the Senedd on 25 November.

The consultation and the discovery work led by the Welsh Revenue Authority, raised consistent feedback that a form of registration is needed to support the levy. This has informed the Welsh Government’s decision to include a national register of all those providing visitor accommodation in Wales within the visitor levy bill.

This is the first step towards a statutory licensing scheme for visitor accommodation in Wales. Further legislation will be brought forward to move us towards visitor accommodation providers being able to demonstrate how their accommodation meets certain conditions.
